How to Choose the Right Garage Door Repair Company

When unexpected problems with your garage door arise, it can cause a lot of frustration and inconvenience.  Finding  a good, reliable, and honest garage door repair company should not add more anxiety to the situation.  So here are five tips on how to choose the right garage door repair company.

Get quotes from 2 or 3 companies.

If you find that your garage door or garage door operator is not working properly, it is to your advantage to get multiple bids to avoid getting overcharged. Many times, customers are in a hurry to get their door fixed and choose the first company that they call. The best way to avoid getting ripped off is to describe the problem over the phone as best as possible. Most reputable companies should be able to give you a rough estimate over the phone. If they will not do this, then call another company. Also, make sure to let the repairman know that he must get your permission before performing any work that exceeds the phone estimate.

Be wary of the repair only specialist.

Many companies specialize in repair work only because they know that many customers are desperate to get their garage door repaired quickly, they don’t have time to check prices of parts online, and they don’t know if the repair is actually necessary. Ask the company if they also install doors and openers. It’s best to get prices from a long established company that does both installations and repairs.

Check the company’s online review history.

Do a quick Google search of the company name followed by complaints. For example, “ABC Garage door complaints”. If the company has numerous bad reviews, obviously you will want to choose another garage door repair company, one that has a positive reviews from their previous customers.

Be alert of how a company answers the phone.

If the company answers the phone with a generic phrase such as “Garage Door Repair” or “Garage Door Service”, you have probably reached a company that operates under so many names that they can’t even answer their own phones truthfully. They then generally ask for your zip code so they can route the call to the nearest location.

Beware of excessive advertising.

Google has now replaced the phone book as a source for many homeowners. But just because a garage door repair company occupies the top position in Google does not mean that they are a reputable company. In some cases, heavy advertising indicates a disreputable company. Two companies in my area advertise in the paid area of Google and they both offer $99.00 off of any repair. But consider: how much do you think the commissioned technician will try to overcharge you before he gives you the $99.00 discount? Common sense must be used by the consumer. The business model of many con artist companies is built on advertising on as many sites or directories as possible so that they can be the first and only repairman to rip you off. The company’s extremely high advertising expense is the main reason why some company’s markup parts as much as 500%.

Read their ad very closely. If they offer a $29.00 service call, be wary. It is not their hourly rate. Many consumers think that the rate is their total labor cost, but it isn’t. It is an extra charge just to come out and ring your doorbell.

In summary, common sense must be used by the consumer when it comes to dealing with garage door repair companies, especially the ones who would like to rip you off. There are plenty of legitimate and honest companies that will treat you fairly.
