5 Simple DIY Home Projects

We’ve found some fun and creative DIY projects to improve your home. With a few simple and easy steps, you can give your home more personality and flair. And it only takes a small amount of your time and money. The best part of these DIY projects is that you get to recycle your old furniture and knick knacks by upgrading them into something useful and beautiful. Recycle, reuse, restore that old furniture you’ve had lying around the house for a year into your next DIY project. Here are some of our favorite DIY projects, for your inspiration.

DIY Rope Basket

Jump start your DIY adventure with this simple project. It’s easy to accomplish, without much experience, and a great way to brighten up your home.

What you’ll need:

  • Regular laundry basket
  • Hot glue gun
  • 5 packs of cotton rope, colors of your choice
  • Time

Begin by flipping the basket upside-down and gluing the rope under the lip of the basket with the hot glue gun. You then simply continue to wrap the rope around, gluing every inch or so, until you have wrapped the entire basket. This will take you about 3 hours. But after that, you have a beautiful rope basket that only cost about $20. What a steal!


DIY Clipboard Picture Hanger

Pictures, pictures, pictures! Today, taking pictures is an easy way to express yourself, your life and what you love. With cameras on all of our phones, we have the ability to capture life at any moment. But what do we do with all of those pictures? Instead of leaving them on your phone to be forgotten, use this DIY project to display your favorite photos!

Step 1: Cut a 6 foot 1 x12 board into four 13 inch pieces with a chop saw.

Step 2: To give the boards a rustic look, sand down the edges and corners with a hand sander.

Step 3: Using a dark walnut stain, stain the boards for about 15 minutes. Re-sand after the stain to continue with the rustic look.

Step 4: Use Miniwax Paste Finishing Wax to seal the boards.

Step 6: Hammer a sawtooth hanger onto the back of each board.

Step 7: Superglue 2 metal clips onto the front of each board to hold your photos.

Step 8: Hang your photos and admire your work!

This DIY project is a unique way to display your favorite photos in your home.


DIY Shutter Magazine Rack

This DIY project is a great way to add some color to your home. Using an old shutter and the paint of your choice, you can have a crafty magazine rack in less than 30 minutes. This is an inexpensive and fun activity that will have your bare wall decorated in no time.

Step 1: Use a Dremel or hammer to remove every other slat on your shutter. If using a hammer, use putty to fill in any holes.

Step 2: Sand down any rough edges after removing the slats.

Step 3: Primer your magazine rack and then spray paint it with the color of your choice.

Voila! You have a colorful magazine rack to put up in your house. It’s useful and decorative!


DIY Chalkboard Menu Cabinet

Chalk board paint is the new up-and-coming, popular way to decorate your home. You can take just about anything, old furniture, doors, panels or even walls, and give it a chalkboard makeover. Not to mention, it’s a great way to communicate with the family about what’s for dinner. Just follow these simple steps!

What you’ll need:

A. One roll of Chalkboard Con-Tact Paper

B. An X-acto knife

C. Adhesive Cardstock in the color of your choice

D. Designs for the “Menu” and “Days of the Week” tags

Start by measuring your cabinet and cutting the Chalkboard Con-Tact Paper to size. Apply the Chalkboard Con-Tact Paper to your cabinet using a scraper to prevent bubbles. Then, lay out the “Menu” and “Days of the Week” designs on the Adhesive Cardstock and cut out the designs. You’ll want to use a tape measure to evenly stick the designs onto the chalkboard cabinet. And there you have it! A crafty way to display your food calendar, so the whole family can use it.


DIY Fence Board Planked Wall

Here’s a really cool way to make your bathroom wall look new, with some basic fence boards. It’s inexpensive and an awesome upgrade for your wall!

Step1: Paint the wall before you start, the color may show through the boards.

Step 2: Measure your wall and decide upon your pattern.

Step 3: Cut your 1×6 fence boards to size and sand off any rough edges.

Step 4: Use a level to ensure a straight line and start your first course on that. Apply the boards at the bottom of the wall using construction adhesive and work up from there.

Step 5: Complete the wall with trim.

Step 6: You can choose to pain the wooden boards or leave them as they are.

This is just another DIY project you can use to easily upgrade any room in your home. The wooden boards add a rustic or shabby-chic flair to your home, without having to spend a lot of money. This wall was completed with only $28! With such a low cost, you could add a plank wall to every room in your house!


These fun and inexpensive DIY projects will add personality to your home, especially since no two DIY projects are ever really the same.
